Brunnstrom Stages of Motor Recovery

Stage Evaluation Criteria
Stage 1 Muscles are in a flaccid state, no voluntary movement, tendon reflexes are weakened or absent
Stage 2 Muscle tone begins to increase, limb shows associated reactions, initial synergistic movements
Stage 3 Muscle spasticity reaches its peak, limb can initiate voluntary synergistic movements, accompanied by corresponding joint movements
Stage 4 Muscle spasticity begins to decrease, components of synergistic movements gradually reduce, partial isolated movements appear
Stage 5 Muscle spasticity significantly decreases, synergistic movement patterns mostly disappear, isolated movements are more complete
Stage 6 Coordinated movements are normal or near normal
