Seddon Classification of Nerve Injury

Grade Description
(1) Neurapraxia Temporary physiological block of nerve conduction without anatomical disruption. No Wallerian degeneration occurs. Recovery is spontaneous within days to weeks.
(2) Axonotmesis Axonal disruption within the myelin sheath. The nerve sheath remains intact. Wallerian degeneration occurs distal to the injury. Recovery is possible over time.
(3) Neurotmesis Complete severance of the nerve fiber or nerve trunk, often requiring surgical repair. Functional recovery may be partial or complete post-surgery.
