Seddon Classification of Nerve Injury
Grade |
Description |
(1) Neurapraxia |
Temporary physiological block of nerve conduction without anatomical disruption. No Wallerian degeneration occurs. Recovery is spontaneous within days to weeks. |
(2) Axonotmesis |
Axonal disruption within the myelin sheath. The nerve sheath remains intact. Wallerian degeneration occurs distal to the injury. Recovery is possible over time. |
(3) Neurotmesis |
Complete severance of the nerve fiber or nerve trunk, often requiring surgical repair. Functional recovery may be partial or complete post-surgery. |
