Result Interpretation

Gestational age (weeks) = total score + 27; if the score of each sign is between two values, the average can be used.

Explanation

This simple scoring method has few items and is easy to operate. It was developed by the First Maternity and Infant Health Hospital of Shanghai, referencing several foreign methods. After clinical practice with over 4,000 newborns, stepwise regression analysis was used to select the four most important signs: plantar creases, nipple formation, nails, and skin texture. The total score plus a constant of 27 gives the gestational age in weeks, without the need to refer to a table.

This assessment scale cannot evaluate extremely low gestational age infants below 27 weeks.
