Diabetes Diagnostic Criteria (WHO)

Number Details
1 Random blood glucose ≥11.1mmol/L (random blood glucose refers to blood glucose at any time of the day, regardless of the last meal time)
2 Fasting blood glucose (FPG) ≥7.0mmol/L (fasting state means no caloric intake for at least 8 hours)
3 2-hour blood glucose after 75g glucose load (2-h PG) ≥11.1mmol/L
4 Diabetes symptoms (typical symptoms include polydipsia, polyuria, and unexplained weight loss)

Explanation

Diabetes symptoms + any one of items 1-3 can diagnose diabetes. For those without diabetes symptoms, blood glucose should be re-measured on another day to confirm the diagnosis. Random blood glucose cannot be used to diagnose impaired fasting glucose (IFG) or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT).

The values in the table above are for venous plasma glucose levels. Only the corresponding 2-hour capillary blood glucose values differ: Diabetes: 2-hour blood glucose ≥12.2mmol/L; IGT: 2-hour blood glucose ≥8.9mmol/L and <12.2mmol/L.
