The Los Angeles classification system was proposed at the 10th World Congress of Gastroenterology in Los Angeles in 1994 and reiterated at the 11th Congress in 1998. This classification system defines esophageal mucosal damage as white plaques or erythema with clear boundaries from the surrounding mucosa, and classifies RE into four grades: A~D based on the extent of mucosal damage.
