The Stanford classification divides aortic dissection into two types:

Type A: Corresponds to DeBakey Type I and Type II, with the intimal tear originating in the ascending aorta;

Type B: Corresponds to DeBakey Type III, with the dissection confined to the descending aorta or abdominal aorta.
