Gartland Classification

In 1959, Gartland classified extension-type fractures into three types:
Type I: No displacement of the fracture
Type II: Posterior angulation of the distal fragment, or lateral displacement, with intact posterior cortex
Type III: Complete displacement of the fracture ends, with no cortical contact
In 1988, Pirone et al. slightly modified this classification, dividing Type II fractures into two subtypes: Type IIIa: Simple posterior angulation of the distal fragment, with intact posterior cortex
Type IIIb: Lateral displacement, or posterior angulation with contact between the fracture ends
