In 1959, Gartland classified extension-type fractures into three types:
|
|
|---|---|
| Type I: | No displacement of the fracture |
| Type II: | Posterior angulation of the distal fragment, or lateral displacement, with intact posterior cortex |
| Type III: | Complete displacement of the fracture ends, with no cortical contact |
| In 1988, Pirone et al. slightly modified this classification, dividing Type II fractures into two subtypes: | Type IIIa: Simple posterior angulation of the distal fragment, with intact posterior cortex |
| Type IIIb: Lateral displacement, or posterior angulation with contact between the fracture ends | |
